In-the-know potters know that putting raw glaze components into landfills or into the sewage system is not really an environmentally sound choice. Even trace elements of the components used as fluxes and colorants can be unhealthy, and they do build up over time.
Mystery glazes are a viable solution to both environmental concerns and financial frugality. It can also be a really fun adventure!
Basically, mystery glaze is nothing more than glaze leftovers mixed together. This mixture of various glazes can lead to some startling results. There are really only two guidelines to follow:
- Only mix glaze leftovers that belong to the same firing range. For example, all cone 06-04 glaze leftovers go in one container, and all cone 5-6 glaze leftovers go into a different container.
- Clearly mark mystery glaze containers: You need to be able to easily see that it is mystery glaze and its cone range.
