Emergency Preparedness Items for the Pottery Studio

By , About.com Guide

There are several emergency preparedness items you should have in your pottery studio that you might not think of as you focus on the clay. Can you guess what they might be?

A First Aid Kit

I personally suggest you build your own first aid kit, since you can add more of the things you think you might need in it. If you don't quite know why different items go in a first aid kit, take the first aid kit tour.

At Least One Fire Extinguisher

Be prepared in case of fire. You should have at least one fire extinguisher rated Class A and C, or one Class A and one Class C extinguisher. If you use liquid petrochemicals for fuel or other flammable liquids (i.e. solvents), you also need an extinguisher that covers Class B.

Post Emergency Numbers

Not only should you post the Poison Control Center number (1-800-222-1222 in the US), but you should also post 911 or your local emergency service numbers for ambulance, fire, and police departments. It is also a good idea to post at least one emergency contact number for a close friend or relative that lives or works in the area, but not at the same place where the studio is.

Have Pertient Health Information Available

In case of emergency you may not be able to speak to emergency responders. I suggest you keep an up-to-date list of prescription and over-the-counter medicines you take, any diagnoses' you have (i.e. high blood pressure), your primary care physician and their contact information, any other doctors you see and their contact information, and two "in case of emergency" numbers of close friends or relatives. Should you have any other health instructions, write them out or gather copies, as well.

Place all this information into a manila envelope, mark it "Emergency Information," and tack or tape it right next to the posted emergency numbers. It is a good idea to give this list to one of your "in case of emergency" people, too.
