Lidded Jars Project Gallery

From Beth Peterson, About.com

Lidded pottery jars have been used for millennia for storing food stuffs and other valuables. It was the humble lidded jar that allowed seeds to be kept safely over the winter and allowed agriculture to become a part of human history.

Lidded jars (and other lidded pottery vessels) present some technical challenges to the potter. The primary challenges are to make a lid that is sized to fit well and that won't slide off. Lidded jars and vessels can be thrown on the wheel or hand built using pinch, coil, and slab-building methods.
