To begin wedging, place a hand on each side of the ball of clay. Push the on the clay in a downward, slightly inward, and away from you motion, moving your hands about two to three inches. The bottom of the clay ball should spread outward slightly against the table.

The inset on the photograph shows the hand placement, and the angle of force inward and downward. It also shows the tail of clay that will be produced as you push.
