Wedging clay is an important preliminary step to working clay. It homogenizes the clay and removes air pockets. Cylinder wedging is the easiest of the kneading-style types of wedging clay.

Wedging needs to be done on a plaster or canvas surface, and is best accomplished standing up. Begin with a ball of clay about the size of a baseball or grapefruit.
