Kaolin (noun) is the very pure clay best known for its use in porcelain clay bodies. Kaolin is also used in other clay bodies, such as some stoneware bodies, and in glazes. It is highly refractory and stiff.
The word "kaolin" is derived from the name of the mountain in China from which the first kaolin that was sent to Europe was mined. The first porcelain produced in Europe used kaolin found in the Alps. Today, dry powered kaolin is commercially available in bags, ready to be mixed with other ingredients to create a clay body.
The kaolin and ball clay porcelain is beginning to really stink. It will be ready to throw soon!
