Frit

By Beth Peterson, About.com

Definition:

Frit (noun): a combination of materials produced to lessen the solubility and toxicity of those materials and / or to increase the stability of those materials within a glaze.

Frits are produced by melting the combined ingredients, then rapidly cooling them. The resulting fragments are then milled, usually to a 200-mesh size. They are available through pottery suppliers and are often referred to by numbers.

Examples:
Frits containing lead are much safer than using raw lead; however, they still require experience and special care to be used safely and appropriately.
