Coil building a mug is a great project as you are beginning to get used to working with clay or as a way to express your inventiveness or love of hot beverages.

The Clay to Use: As with all pottery that can be used for food or drinkables, the best clay bodies will be a mid- to high-fire stoneware. Although porcelain clay bodies also work, they tend to be much more demanding to work with. A white stoneware body is a good compromise.

The Glaze(s) to Use: The glaze(s) and the clay body should have the same maturation temperature.

You will want to have about one pound of ready-to-work clay, fully wedged, slip, a brush, a piece of chamois, a wooden trimming tool, and a potter's needle. You may also want to use other tools, as you prefer. I often use a rubber rib for welding and smoothing the outer surfaces.
