Pottery Apprentice

From Beth Peterson, About.com GuideSeptember 11, 2009

I just lucked into a pottery apprentice, so to speak! My nephew was supposed to be starting classes on Monday, but he's been delayed until mid-October. In the meantime, he'll be coming down two or three times a week to help me in my studio. Yesterday, we unloaded a glaze kiln and began getting ready for the next one. It was his first time to do glazing, and I think he really enjoyed it!

In exchange, I'm teaching him not only about pottery, but also painting, 2-D design, and 3-D design. Yesterday we got into color theory, which was pretty interesting!

If you know someone who is interested in what you are doing, invite them to learn by helping you. Potters have learned their craft through apprenticeships for hundreds of years. It is still a great system, today!

If you have the chance, would you take on an apprentice? Who would you want as your apprentice -of-choice?
