When Words Fail, Pottery Can Help

Monday July 6, 2009

Some of the hardest events we face are also the hardest to talk about. Losing a loved one leaves us grieving. For many of us, talking through our grief can be nearly impossible.

Non-verbal expression can help. Elaine Dzwonkowski is a coordinator for New Hope Center for Grief Support. In a recent article, she spoke about the benefits of using pottery as art therapy with grieving children and teens. "Many times children aren't able to express themselves verbally, so they do it through play or art. This is a good way for them to express their grief."

Do you know of someone who has had a recent loss? Perhaps you could reach out to them, invite them into your studio, and give them the opportunity to express themselves through clay. When words fail, pottery can help.

you may want to check the date: it opens July 10th, not the 11th.
