Use Pottery to Hide Unsightly Dart Holes!

From Beth Peterson, About.com GuideMay 12, 2009

This one made me chuckle, for certain. The potters (mom, son and daughter) of Expressly Yours Studio came up with a great way to hide the holes in their wall after moving the family dartboard!

Not only is this a creative way to hide holes, but they also give two very good pointers if you want to create holes in your fired pottery to hang it up.

One is inherent in their picture --- note that the piece is set in the drill press at an angle. This will result in an angled hole so that the piece will hang securely. That's especially important for a piece that comes so far off the wall! (Also note that the ceramic piece is supported directly under the drill bit. That support is essential so the downward force doesn't crack the clay.)

The second is a simple As Sloan (the son) writes: "I used a ceramic tile drill bit and it was super easy." Use the right drill bit for the job, and you'll save yourself a lot of time, frustration, and possible a load of broken pots.

"Wait, Beth!" you may say. "I don't have a drill press!" Not a problem. You can do the same thing with a hand-held drill, too! (I don't have a drill press, either.) For big or awkward pieces, you might want to get a friend to hold the piece for you as you drill.

Too funny, we have since added another hand to the “hole wall” and made it even more creepy
