The Arts Living Together

From Beth Peterson, About.com GuideSeptember 8, 2008

Ah, my dad is right in his reply to my post, Pots For Everyone. Painter to potter, he has a very good point. Both art forms are at their very best when they become an integral part of someone's life. When they bring joy, contemplation, comfort, or peace to those who are in contact with them, whether that be through tactile contact, visual contact, or a combination of the two.

Art that people live with. Art forms that live with each other. Dad has reminded me that, quite often, as I sit cradling my coffee mug I am gazing at a painting and following that visual communication --- sinking into its depths.

How blessed we are to be able to have such object around us, even in our ordinary, everyday lives. In this day and age it is easy to forget how special personal artwork once was --- how rare it was. How precious it was, once upon a time, to be able to have a master work from a painter, a potter, a sculptor, or any other type of artist in your home.

As you sit with your favorite pottery mug contemplating your favorite painting, think of how rich your own life is. How enriched the arts --- all the arts --- have made it.

The Navajos speak of the Pollen Path, on which they find beauty above, beauty below, beauty all around…
