Museums and Ceramic Art

From Beth Peterson, About.com GuideAugust 10, 2008

If you are ever in the Pomona, CA area, be sure to check out AMOCA, the American Museum of Ceramic Art. Their current exhibition features ceramic artists from the American Ceramic Society's Southern California chapter, and the next exhibition will feature the work of Robert Sperry. (Find out more here.)

On the other side of the continent, the Gardiner Museum in Toronto, Canada opened their expanded galleries and studio spaces in 2006. The Gardiner has two exhibitions running currently, Object Factory: The Art of Industrial Design and Independence & Ingenuity: Freelance Porcelain Decorators in 18th Century Europe. Find more information on these and upcoming exhibitions here.

These are only two museums featuring ceramics. Wherever you are, take a look around. Ceramics abound in many museum settings, from the small collections of local historical societies to the ultra-large museums such as the Smithsonian Institute. Pottery has been an integral part of our human history, just as it continues to be a part of our lives as well as a part of our art.
