In the Heart of the Fire

Saturday May 17, 2008

Earth, air, water, and fire -- pottery is elemental. Potters engage and work with each of these ancient elements. We cajole these elements into work in harmony, even when it would seem they would refuse.

Earth and fire.... Just what is it that takes place in the heart of the fire? What happens to the earth, the clay, that changes it so fundamentally?

After all, before it is kissed by the flame, clay is weak. It is completely malleable. It crumbles easily and breaks under any form of pressure. When dry, it can completely disintegrate in moments when immersed in water.

And yet this same substance can become as hard as rock, or even harder. All through facing the heart of the fire. Meeting temperatures that would crisp you or I. What does temperature do to clay?
